ENJOY MANY TURKISH DELIGHTS AT THE 2ND ANNUAL TURKISH ARTS AND CULTURE FESTIVAL ON AUGUST 7 & 8, 1999
June 29, 1999, Monterey, CA Due to the immense success of its debut last year, the 2nd Annual Turkish Arts and Culture Festival will be held on Saturday and Sunday, August 7th and 8th, 1999 from 11 am 6 pm at the Custom House Plaza, adjacent to the Fishermans Wharf and Doubletree Hotel in Monterey with free admission. Featuring many fun activities for the whole family, the two-day festival will include Turkish music and folk dances, Turkish arts and crafts exhibits and vendor booths, food and drinks and many special activities for children.
In addition, there will be a special Turkish Concert and Dance Party in the Serra Ballroom at the Monterey Conference Center on Saturday evening, August 7th from 8 pm to 11:30 pm. Tickets to the Concert, which will include live music, folk dancing and belly dancing by performers seen and heard at the Festival, are available at the door and at the Festival on Saturday. Tickets to the Turkish Concert and Dance Party are $15 for adults, $10 for students/seniors and includes a free soft drink. The Festival was created to help people gain a greater understanding of the richly diverse and fascinating culture of present-day and ancient Turkey, which was an important crossroads of trade and travel between Asia and Europe, known as the Silk Road. As a melting pot, Turkey has a diversity of regions each with its own folk dancing, food and culture who live together in peace. Exhibits of Turkish art, including tapestry and carpet weaving, gilding and photography will be on display. Well-known award-winning cartoonist and freelance artist, Orhan Coplu (www.coplu.com), will have a very special exhibit, Turkey in Cartoons, and will be doing poster and T-shirt signings at the Festival. Performances of traditional Turkish live music entertainment, folk dancing and belly dancing will be held on both days accompanied by folk dancing workshops for audience participation. The Childrens Tent will include story telling, folk dancing, shadow puppets, face painting and coloring. The Festival will offer delicious Turkish food and drinks, including Adana kebap (a tasty Mediterranean hamburger), doner kebap (spicy barbecued meat), borek (a cheese and spinach filled pastry), baklava and the wonderful thick strong Turkish coffee. The Festival is presented by the non-profit Turkish American Association of California,
in cooperation with the Monterey Bay Chapter.
