| y | i | While waiting for my connecting flight from
London to Newark, NJ, today , I walked into the WH Smith Bookstore at the Heathrow Airport
, Terminal 4, and casually asked if they had any books on Turkey. One of the many
hostesses working in the bookstore took me to the travel section and started looking
. " I am sorry, we don't have any " she said. I told her that Turkey is a very
nice vacation destination. She said, yes , I know, but she couldn't find any books on
Turkey. I kept looking myself, thinking that there must be at least one book , may be the
Planet book. No, there was not a single book on Turkey where 10% of all British tourists
go to every year, one or two even marry a Turk that they meet at resort towns. I also
looked at the history section, the biography section of the huge bookstore, but , there
was none, except a book on the " Mediterranean Europe " which had a
section on Turkey, a suprise. This is just a casual observation of a bookstore at one of the busiest airports in the world. I told the hostess that she should make a note of this and make sure that they order books on Turkey. She said she would. Who knows, may be Turkey is in such a demand that all the books the bookstore had were sold, but I doubt it and the hostess couldn't confirm that either. With regards. Yuksel Oktay |
