Who is Sefika Gaspirali (1886-1975)?
Sefika Gasprali is:
Yes, she is this multi-faceted and colorful.
This book is not only about her life, but also about a period of her life which is least known. The book tells the story of the Muslim Turk* women, bereft of education, and who for centuries were virtually imprisoned in their homes and behind their veils, and their awakening, education, organizations, and their politicization during the late 19th and early 20th centuries
Sefika Gaspirali and the Turk Women's Movement in Russia is a drama about women who besides being bereft of basic human rights and freedoms, were daily subjected to abuse and even forced to sell their children to churches because of famine; it is about a part of humanity who despite being a part of an exploited and suppressed minority, and who despite all these disadvantages still managed to start a movement earlier than that of similar types in many western countries, and about a movement that became a political feminist force.
Importance of the Book:
We are familiar with Necip Hablemitoglu's 1997 book about the Turk Congresses in Tsarits Russia. It was based on the archives of Ismail Gaspirali whose work was intended to fulfill the need in Turkey of researchers for knowledge of the Turco-Muslims of Russia. The book is an extremely important addition to the literature of the Turco-Muslims of Russia, in ways similar to the book on the Tsarist Russia's Turco-Muslim congresses.
Aside from being the first research on Turk feminist history, the glossary and the references are those that cannot be found elsewhere, since they are documents given to Necip Hablemitoglu by Sefika Gaspirali from the archives of Ismail Gaspirali, and thus are being made available to researchers for the first time.
After seeing the quality of this book, Some is more cognizant now that Ms. Gaspirali made the right choice in entrusting her family's works to Necip and Sengul Hablemitoglu; the scholarly world and the Turkic world can be justifiably proud. In an era in which archives are being plundered and sold to the West for money, the existence of such people creates a feeling of hope for the future.
The masterpiece prepared by Sengul and Necip Hablemitoglu, created in the recent past which saw the dissolution of the Soviet Union, consisting of 60 photographs and 77 original documents and addenda, is a priceless and unique contribution to the scholarship of not only the Turco-Muslims of Russia, but also to the history of women's movement, to the political sciences, to the history of Turkistan and the Caucasus, and even anthropology; it is something that everyone who is interested in ..... should have in his library. It is valuable for even those who might want it for general cultural knowledge.
(*) refers to the peoples of Turkic ethnicity of Tsarist Russia. In
other words it refers to the Crimean Tatars of Ukraine, Tatars of Russia, peoples of Azerbaijan and Turkic speaking peoples of the North Caucasus and
